How Music Helps

Supporting Growth and Development
Music therapy offers children and young people a safe, playful and expressive space to explore who they are and how they relate to the world around them. For those with SEN, SEMH or other additional needs, music can support communication, sensory integration, emotional expression and self-regulation in a way that feels natural and enjoyable. Through therapeutically-informed improvisation, musical interaction and shared play, children can discover their own agency, build confidence, and experience success on their own terms, supporting curiosity, growth and empowerment.

Mental Health and Wellbeing
Music can be a powerful support for mental health at any age. For those living with anxiety, low mood, stress, bereavement or emotional overwhelm, music therapy can offer a creative outlet for expression and understanding. In a calm and supportive environment, music can help people process difficult feelings, release tension, reconnect with themselves, and find moments of hope and positivity. Music sessions can contribute to overall wellbeing—promoting relaxation, building resilience, and providing a grounding sense of connection.

Connection and Community
Music brings people together. Group sessions and community music-making offer a welcoming environment where individuals can connect without pressure, contribute in their own way, and experience a sense of belonging. Drawing on social models of health, sessions focus on participation, inclusion and shared experience—celebrating diversity and supporting meaningful relationships. Whether through singing, rhythm or creative collaboration, group music-making can strengthen communities and create moments of joy, equality and togetherness.

About

I am an HCPC-registered music therapist with experience providing music therapy across a wide range of settings, including SEN and SEMH education, dementia care, palliative care, neurological rehabilitation and addiction recovery services.

Alongside my musical work, I have a background in Social Anthropology and education. After graduating from university I taught in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America before returning to the UK to work as both a writer and musician. Since completing my Master’s in Music Therapy with Nordoff and Robbins, I have continued to work with the organisation while developing my own independent practice.

I believe that self-expression, agency and social connection can be available to everyone. By making music accessible and collaborative, people of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to connect more deeply with themselves and others.
